something that makes me cringe to see, and that i have to watch that i don’t do, is as a white person separate myself from “bad” white people in race discussions/anti-racist blogging
things like:
- “you make me ashamed to be white”
- “you make white people look bad”
- “i’m ashamed to be the same race as you”
- white people talking about “white people” as if they’re not one (the lack of “we” and “us”)
- using “cracker” “honkey” “whitey” “white [boy/girl]”
like… yeah racists are shitty. but i’m still white, i still exist in a white supremacist society, and and can and have still contributed to upholding that. whether i like it or not i have shared spheres with racists, and i think that has to be acknowledged.
trying to create a dichotomy of good vs bad white people means when “good” white people fuck up, they’re not going to get held accountable for their fuckery because they’re not as bad as “bad” white people.
just.. seeing white people calling out/collecting racists with this kinda approach really doesn’t seem constructive or okay.

back in Houston (this was maybe 10 years ago now?) this one time I was at my friend L’s house (Latino dude) & his white friend D was there & was telling me about some reality show or another that he was watching—I can’t remember if it was about cops or if it was about emergency rooms. Anyway, D was telling me about this scene he just watched & he was cracking up as he told me about this mother’s reaction to the fact that her son had just been killed. Someone’s pain regarding the death of their child was funny to this person.
Why was it funny?
What kind of sickness would make a person think this was funny?
“She said, ‘you done killeded my baby!’ AAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!”
you see, it was funny because she spoke AAVE. She was black, so her pain wasn’t a moment for commiseration or sympathy, it was comedy to him.
white people, this is why nobody trusts you.

Students aged 13 and 14 were given imaginary tools including manacles, whips, thumb screws, iron brands, muskets and barracoons, and asked to devise a Dragon’s Den-style (a reality TV show known as Shark Tank in the US) business proposal for the capture and enslavement of African people. Lesson materials included direction on how to carry out a “slave raid” and manipulate “African Chiefs” through bribes and lacing them with alcohol. Perhaps the most debased suggestions were that the “best” aspect of being a slave trader was having “an affair with a beautiful African girl,” and that adult male “mixed race” offspring could be sent to Africa to “run the slave business” while his white father sailed to America.
Teaching the history of enslavement via a business plan model serves to erase violence, oppression and numerous traumatic events such as the systematic rape of black girls and women. The teacher/s involved in this particular lesson plan saw nothing inappropriate or offensive about their methods. Yet, it would be hard to imagine that these same individuals would sanction a history class on the Holocaust that required students to figure out how to exterminate Jewish people. But black genocide is somehow different, less painful, less abhorrent, and thus vulnerable to trivialization. In 1986, Susan Rice (presently the subject of unjust Republican opposition to her potential nomination for the position of Secretary of State) argued that:
The greatest evil in omitting or misrepresenting Black history, literature, and culture in elementary or secondary education is the unmistakable message it sends to the black child. The message is ‘your history, your culture, your language and your literature are insignificant. And so are you.’
The implicit message of this particular history lesson was not lost on one 13 year old black girl, who in a state of distress complained to her mother about the humiliation she felt during the class. The mother soon after met with two teachers who refused to acknowledge the harm caused to her daughter, and instead sought to justify the innovative approach of the class. They, and later a third teacher, argued that the class emphasized how the slave trade was largely “divorced from moral and social issues”, and that it had been taught for three years without objection.
wait wait wait
hold it right there
this is a perfect example of how color-blind racism is steeped in anti-Blackness.
they won’t teach the Holocaust the same way, but they will teach American chattel slavery in this manner.
they are human, so it’s a morality issue, but we are not, so no1curr.
ok then.

Lack of knowledge on the actual policies. Very few people actually understand the original executive orders, subsequent judicial decisions and legislation beyond sound bites via “news” that is insistent upon painting this as “taking stuff” from Whites for Black people (as if it is “just” about Black people). Honesty, how many White people have reviewed the actual history of why this is needed? It’s almost as rare to find as anyone who calls themselves “patriotic” who has actually read the Constitution or a Christian who has read the Bible. Media soundbites shaped by bigotry (in a White supremacist capitalist patriarchal society) absorbed by many Whites whose life ideologies have been shaped by bigotry is not going to produce the nuance and thought necessary to understand affirmative action. (Even so, these two simple, non in-depth cartoons explain this almost as well as the complex legalese: 1 and 2.)
Anti-intellectualism. Piggybacking on the first point, the current culture of anti-intellectualism doesn’t encourage most White people (and Americans at large) to actually investigate things they are “for” or “against.” It’s much simpler to decide to be “for” anything shaped by a legacy of White supremacy and White privilege and against anything that appears to be contrary to the former. Whites are used to being a “baseline,” the “norm,” or not considered a group at all, but those whom other groups are compared to. Sociopolitically, many Whites are having a “day of reckoning” moment by even being classified as a “group,” or a “race” as Tom Scocca pointed out so well in a recent article about Romney’s overwhelming support from Whites. These factors contribute to the resistance to affirmative action.
Ahistorical views on race. If a White person takes the “why isn’t there a White history month” and “why isn’t there a White Entertainment Television station” stances on Whites and the media, it can be safely assumed that they are either uneducated or being willfully ignorant about the role of race in America and why certain spaces exist for Black people amidst the media, public discourse and culture itself. By pretending that the tide of history has no racial element, they can then infer that if everyone “is equal” (as if being equal means being treated equally) Black people are “unfairly” getting “goodies” through affirmative action. This also ignores the fact that even with said theoretical ”goodies,” unemployment, health care, finances, real estate, and more is markedly worse for Black people (and other people of colour) versus White. The latter is written off as Black “character failures” in the ever so common victim blaming ideologies such as American “exceptionalism” and even “patriotism” at times. This is where LIES about “poverty culture” come about as a way to praise greed, wealth and Whiteness and demonize suffering, poverty and Blackness.
The concept of what “greatness” is. The inherent racism involved in assuming that someone White is always “more” qualified, as if being White is a skill itself, is common in everything from college admissions to employment applications. The idea is that some “stupid” minority “stole” a slot from the perfect White knight on a horse who deserved things because he “worked” for them prevails. Further, the idea that perhaps a series of advantages afforded by White privilege is “hard work” would be even more humorous if it wasn’t despicable. Said privileges often place Whites ahead in spaces by sheer virtue of the luxury of Whiteness, not any actual work. The myth of meritocracy is a plague on the American psyche. (Christopher Hayes wrote about this oh too well in his book Twilight Of The Elites - America After Meritocracy. Also, I recently read a fascinating study about the REALITY of financial aid versus the myth that “stupid” minorities “take all of the college monies,” and other assorted lies.)
A zero/sum view of racism. Ultimately, many Whites feel that any joy, success or progress in Black life means misery, failure and regression in White life. Period. This tunnel vision view is rooted in racism and fear. Research has revealed that many cisgender heterosexual White men feel like the “real” victims in America. Even if they are victims, would that not be at the hands of men just like them, except of a higher social class? Not to them. Racist social narratives involve the worship of “job creators” (the same ones who fire these men) as heroes because after all, they share Whiteness even if they don’t share class, status or cash. Other research has revealed that while some Whites view past times (during and pre-Civil Rights era) as a time more racist against Blacks, they view today as “more racist” against Whites. Of course this is false and has more to do with the idea of some Black people not suffering and Barack Obama’s existence more than any in-depth study of how race is a primary factor to consider when examining socioeconomic status. The enlightened exceptionalism involved in some who even choose to praise Oprah or Beyonce or LeBron James is what allows them to pretend that life for the average and for most Black people has dramatically changed, when for many, it has not. Claims of “reverse racism,” which doesn’t exist, are more common now than ever.
People who benefit from affirmative action also want it destroyed. While more than anyone else, White women have benefited from affirmative action, many of them stand with White men against affirmative action while simultaneously benefiting from it. Most people now know the name Abigail Fisher and know it well. Further, many older Black people (primarily men from what I’ve seen) want it dismantled despite the fact they benefited from it in the past. They clearly knew that in their time especially, being qualified was not enough. Assumed inferiority blocked their way.

BUT TODAY
YOU GONNA BE
DELIVERED!
Welcome to the Church of PoC Doin Work!
Let us open up today’s sermon with a verse.
Please open up your Black Bibles, to the Book of Beysus, chapter one, verse one, lines 12-13: “I think I need a barber, none of these niggas can fade me.” I need y’all crackhas to realize that neither can you. Stop trying, lest yo ass be made the fool.
Let us simmer in that wisdom, and meditate on it while we partake in communion. Everyone please take your cracker into your hand—the food one, not the person. And the Black Jeebus said, “This is the body of white Jesus, who is a lie, because we all know that Jesus weren’t white. This is also the ego of every white person out there who is too much of a basic bitch to understand anything PoC say. This is also the flesh of every white person you will ever have to tear into. Eat this in amusement of their foolishness.” Please eat your cracker now.
Now, everybody lift up your cup. And the Black Jeebus said on the sermon in the hood, “This is the white tears of the white people. They mad that Jesus ain’t white, so this will be salty as hell, but fear not. For that which is salty shall refresh your soul, replenish your spirit, and moisturize your skin, and get them kinks and curls poppin. So drink this in remembrance of me.” Let it be known, henceforth and forevermore. Please drink your white tears and enjoy your revitalized youth.
Now, let us move onto today’s sermon, which will be entitled, “Your white ass don’t get to determine for PoC what is and isn’t when it doesn’t affect you.” The main points:
And since we have extra time, a bonus point:
- You are white. You don’t get to determine what is offensive to us.
- You are white. You don’t get to tell us how to react to what is offensive to us.
- You are white. PoC react to racism in different ways, and you don’t get to determine what is legitimate or not.
- You are white. When PoC call you on your privileged shit, shut the fuck up and listen because we ain’t just calling you out for our own personal pleasure. That shit is not fun, contrary to your beliefs.
- You can come to my inbox with all the bullshit you want, but don’t get mad when you get tow’ up.
- You can be white and oppressed. But your other oppressions do not negate your white privilege. Stop using your disabilities, gender, LGBT identification, economic status as a crutch, as if there aren’t PoC who share those same oppressions with you.
- Whatever you’re about to say, we have heard from another white person who came before you, so you might as well just keep quiet because don’t no1 curr.
And now, it’s time for the tithes and offering. Go to the PoC blogger of your choice and hit their donate button or drop them a message of support and love. Dealing with ig’nant white folk is God’s work being done did. While you do that, let us do the announcements:
- The Church of PoC Doin Work strives to be multicultural and include all cultures. If you would like to join the administrative board so that we can add more to our services, please feel free to leave your input.
- Can we get some testimonies from some of the white folk that we converted into PoC Supremacists? We do love hearing your stories if you desire to share.
- AND IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE CHURCH OF PoC DOIN WORK, PLEASE STAND AND LET US WELCOME YOU! We ain’t got no gift baskets, but we do have love, unless you’re a supremacist who has come to spread their hate, then we have the door. But not before giving you harsh words, because, like the Book of Mama says in chapter 4, verse 17, “Knock em out.”
- If there are any folk in the building who are interested in becoming PoC Supremacists here at the Church of PoC Doin Work, please stand. If you are a PoC and ready to stop drinkin the kool aid, say so. If you are white and want to learn to dismantle your privilege, speak now and we will provide you with instructions on how to use Google in your daily life.
And now, it is time for a song. Let us open our Hymnals to page 43. We’re going to close this sermon out with an oldie: Kirk Franklin’s, “Revolution.”
And now, let us take some prayer requests. The primary one seems to be, “White folk, you’re already online. Can you google shit before coming to me?” so we’ll keep that one in this week. Now bow your head. It’s time for prayer.
Dear Black Jeebus, bless these ig’nant white folk, and guide their tongues and fingers. For if you don’t check them, my PoC ass will, and these crackers gonna be crumbs real quick. I’mma be breakin bread in the skreets, lawd. Watch over them and check they asses before I do.
Let us all stand together.
AND THE CHURCH SAID?

I’m sure this will stir some debate but like ever have a time where someone trying to be politically correct just ends up being wrong????
We were reading “Heart of Darkness” in my senior year AP English class, and someone referred to a group of people in the book as “African-Americans”. My (old, eccentric white guy) English teacher basically lost his mind and started screaming, “THEY’RE SOUTH AFRICANS WHO ARE BLACK, URCHIN WEED!”
One time somebody told me that there are even African-American people in Germany.
I once heard someone call Othello an African-American. He was Italian.
^^^ “URCHIN weed”
Your teacher called a student an urchin WEED

- No matter how racially specific an author is about the color of a character’s skin, ethnic/racial background, there will always be an excuse to make them white.
- No matter how offensive and erasing it is to intentionally change the race of a character of color, it is always “okay” as long as you’re “just roleplaying” - and if anyone has a problem with it is just being “childish” and “prejudice”.
- IN OTHER WORDS: it’s perfectly okay to be a racist little assfuck because changing a CoC white in no way, shape, or form implies my obvious state of subconscious racism.
But when folks wanted to make Peter Parker black, white people lost their fucking MINDS.
When Miles came up in the show for Spider Man, white people LOST THEIR FUCKING MINDS.
When an African Muslim man was showcased as Bruce Wayne’s representative for France in the comic books, white people LOST THEIR FUCKING MINDS.
When a Desi woman went to the Hobbit and the racist fucks told her NO BROWN PEOPLE even though IT IS CANON, white people lost their fucking minds AND somehow turned it into “the niggers are acting uppity!!!”
When a black man played Heimdall, White people LOST THEIR FUCKING MINDS. Funny how nobody said a word about Asano as a Hogun….
When black POC in the Hunger Games showed up as Black in the movie, white people ACTIVELY SAID THEY DIDN’T FEEL BAD WHEN A LITTLE BLACK GIRL WAS IMPALED WITH A METAL SPEAR SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE SHE WASN’T WHITE.
Fuck white people.
I still remember the flip outs over Helga Hufflepuff. No race was ever specified and yet there were 8768579575 angry posts from people who didn’t know shit about history but who had managed to convince themselves that a WOC in Medieval Europe with any kind of power or wealth was impossible. Never mind the physical evidence to the contrary, or you know recorded history. Nope, we were all talking crazy to think POC could have been involved in the creation of Hogwarts.

I find it sooo damn funny when White people use the whole “it’s historical, you darkies weren’t there” and blah blah blah reason to justify the exclusion of POC from fantasy fiction. Yet when POC have just the one fantasy book, or game about them White people want to inject themselves and find bullshit reason as to why.
Avatar the Last Airbender film had white protags even though the main characters in the series are not white and the world they live in is high fantasy mythical Asia.
“These characters are Asian”
“Nooooo they are not it says Earthbender not Japanese!!!111”
Yet a POC in something like the Hobbit is just not allowed.
“They could at least have some diverse casting if not in the main cast maybe the supporting hell even in the background”
“Shut up!111!!oneone It takes place in European magic times you darkies werent there”
“Actually there is evidence of Africans and Asian in these places-
“BLAh shut up I like my fantasy whiter than bleach on snow white”
I think the only other times I saw Black people in fantasy medieval europe other than Merlin and Dr Who was in Black Knight with Martin Lawrence (everyone thought he was just a Moor that was visiting from Normandy, France) and Morgan Freeman as a Moor in Robin Hood
Dragonball Evolution based on Chinese folklore
“This sucks man Goku is Japanese, this is based on Chinese folklore.”
“Goku is not Asian he is Saiyan1!”
“Superman is from Krypton I guess that he can be portrayed by any race too huh?”
“NOOO!!111 Superman is an all American hero!”
And of course Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys was to be made into a film but the producers wanted to remove the mystical elements and have the characters be White instead of Black but Gaiman told them Fuck no.
Earthsea was another book that had a POC main cast and world but was whitewashed in the film adaptation even in the Anime.
The Arkh project features POC in a high fantasy game whenever have you seen that? And with a Black lead hero character that is genderqueer? I mean there are so few Black females in video games to begin with but can anyone name me one that is the lead? All I can think of is Catwoman and Shinobu from No More Heroes 2 and you only get to play as her for a short amount of time then its back to Travis
Yet there were white people upset that there wouldn’t any white characters (there are 2 but very minor.)
White people have soooooo many fantasy books, films, tv shows, video games based on Europe with White people and even hijack POC fantasy be content with what you have and let us have ours. Bitching like spoiled children, really.
POC ain’t supposed to have nothing in this world or the fantasy worlds created.
